Everyone needs a hobby. Hobbies are activities done as a means of relaxation. Collecting, where someone acquires items of interest, is one of the oldest and most popular hobbies in the world. For some it is simply a hobby, but for others it can also be a way of generating wealth through investment. It is considered by some to be an addiction, but at least it tends to be a socially accepted addiction.

The range of objects that can be collected are almost limitless. A small sample includes stamps, coins, minerals, fossils, dolls, autographs, art, wine, books, butterflies, shells, meteorites, antiques, cameras, figurines, postcards, cars, bikes etc. Some people like to show off their collections while others prefer to keep them private. Some items require large amounts of space or cash to get started, while others can be done for free or even if living in a small apartment. It is a hobby that a parent and child can do together and it can also be both educational and informative. Some like to take part in collecting all year round, while others find it a useful diversion in the colder, winter months.

Collecting is more than just amassing stuff. One of the best aspects is the hunt, especially when trying to fill in gaps in the collection. Buying, selling and trading are also integral aspects of collecting.
